Partners for a Cure Foundation was founded upon an observation made by Kim Goebel in 2001. While Kim was undergoing treatment for cancer at the time, she listened sympathetically to the other patients around her tell tragic stories of abandonment, of not having insurance to cover medical costs or how some women couldn’t even afford transportation to and from their medical appointments. Many of these women, she noticed, were mothers who were also agonizing over how they were going to tell their children about their illness.
Kim firmly decided that she was going to help these people. She thought about ways to encourage communication between children and adults and this led to the creation of the Kimmie Cares doll and book. The doll is a very effective tool for helping adults explain their cancer to younger children who would otherwise be frightened by the changes in their mother or father’s life, particularly the loss of hair from chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
The Kimmie Cares doll was created to comfort children, to bring their fears and feelings to the surface using play therapy, explaining their parent’s illness and subsequent hair loss. Using the Kimmie Cares doll and book, parents can explain cancer to their children as well as the effects of the treatment that follows. Instead of trying to find the exact words, adults and children can read the Kimmie Cares book together and focus on the healing process through improved communication.
Kim, along with her sister Kris, then went on to establish Partners for
A Cure Foundation, dedicated to helping cancer patients with immediate financial needs. Partners for a Cure Foundation is the non-profit organization responsible for the creation and production of the Kimmie Cares doll.
While many other organizations fund cancer research, donating money for equipment, new medicines and scientists' salaries, Partners for a Cure Foundation takes a somewhat different approach. All proceeds from the sale of the Kimmie Cares doll as well as donations collected through this site and other means are distributed not to scientists, but to individuals, across the entire country, with cancer who need financial assistance.
We understand the cost of battling cancer is very high. We provide help to people in whatever form it may be needed, from day care services to physician and hospital fees. Partners for a Cure Foundation thanks you for buying a Kimmie Cares doll and wants you to know that by your purchase, you too have contributed to the well being of many others with this disease.
